Introduction of the C79 class 4-4-0 to NSW in 1877 for the New South Wales Government Railway (N.S.W.G.R.) and as part of the NSW 1924 reclassification scheme, 48 members of the class were reclassified as the Z12 class and renumbered 1201 to 1248.

• The Z1210 was the first locomotive to work the new line from Queanbeyan to Canberra in 1913.
• In 1955, to celebration the centenary of rail operations in New South Wales, Z1243 and Z1210 travelled around NSW for the occasion.
• Z12 Class numbers 1243 and 1210 did the "Last Steam Train Trip to Gosford" on January 23, 1960.
• In 1962 on a special trip to Canberra, Z1210 was used and on its arrival was taken out of service and placed on display outside Canberra railway station. This was significant for Canberra as Z1210 hauled the first train into the city in 1913.
